Sailing around the world sounds unattainable but it is not per se. It is an immense experience to discover far lands with your own sailing yacht. And crossing the ocean is perhaps the sailors climax. You spend weeks at sea while catching your own fish and enjoying the dolphins which swim along. And on the horizon awaits a new unknown land. Truly Idyllic. In this blog I give the different sailors I met, their ships and in a nutshell the cost of a medium budget circumnavigation.
Young, old, poor rich
World sailors come in different shapes and sizes. From Swedish bank director to London Taxi driver, from very young to well over the pension age; I met them all. The oldest world sailor was 74 and the youngest 21. The biggest ship was 58 feet while the smallest measured a mere 22. The most exorbitant cruising budget was €33.000 per year while the poorest world sailor managed with €800. This happy fellow survived by stuffing himself in all inclusive hotels and work en route. So everyone with €800 and a yacht can do it!
Keep it Simple Stupid!
Many sailors stuff their yacht with unnecessary gadgets, mostly compensating for a lack of experience. The experienced world sailor knows better. A good anchor, dinghy and spare parts are far more important than gadgets. Unfortunately I also bought equipment I didn’t need and I too learned. KISS!
The voyage begins with a yacht. New or second hand? Modern or classic? How do you know which yacht is suitable without “blue water” experience? Some sailors fall in love with “the yacht” which later turns out to be unfit. They end up frustrated fixing things in the harbor or with a broken mast in a desolate place. It is smart to ask advice from experienced world sailors and have the yacht inspected professionally. Prevents disappointment.
The cost in a nutshell
- For a couple a 32, 34, 36 feet yacht is just fine for a circumnavigation. In the current market you buy a second hand seaworthy model for say €25.000, €34.000 or €50.000.
- Add to this the inspection and many preparation cost of yacht and crew. Count on the price of the yacht.
- In addition there is the annual maintenance budget of €4000, €5000 of €6500 depending on the yacht’s size.
- And finally the cruising budget for your life as world sailor. As a couple €1000,- per month is fine.
That’s about it. Three year around the world in a 34 feet yacht and we speak of roughly €120.000. World sailors sold their house, rented it or saved to get the money. Ofcourse, a circumnavigation is costly. It requires ones energy, persistence and patience. And one has to give up a lot. But to sail around the world with ones own yacht is worth it through and through.
Who knows one day we meet somewhere under the palm trees!
