Sailing the world is expensive, but the world sailor has to cope with the cost of boating products which brake after a couple of months . The sailor has to try to effect the warranty rights of the manufacturer. It turns out that this is not always easy. Beginning of February I blog about the three best and worst boating products for world sailors. I reveal how a number of well known manufacturers fail the world sailor while some others offer a helping hand. This week I blog about living off the wind. Flying home and sailing a year longer make that I have to earn some money this year. And because only the birds can live off the wind, I go looking for work.
When I sailed out of IJmuiden on a rainy afternoon in the afternoon of 2011, I thought I would be back within a year or two. But things turned out differently. I enjoyed sailing the world thoroughly and stayed longer at every destination than planned. In the Cape Verdes I was asked as marketing executive and I accepted the job. In 2012- 2013 I created the marketing strategy for Sailcapeverde and Cabo-V and chartered with a luxury sailing yacht around the islands. I proved to myself I can also be successful outside of the Netherlands.
8000 miles further
Since I left the Netherlands some two and a half years have passed and I sailed some 8000 Miles. We haven´t circumnavigated the globe by far and we are not going home. So this year I will getting back to work. But what kind of work shall I do? I am a lawyer, marketing specialist, project manager and sailor. It is not so easy to explain to people what it is I do and to find something which combines with the journey.
Bringing growth to companies
In the Cape Verde the challenge was to help a company without marketing tools or clients to get clients and marketing instruments. I accepted the challenge and realized a lot in a year together with my team: clients, revenue growth, two websites and more. There are few projects to me which are as fulfilling as realizing revenue growth for starting enterprises or enterprises which face setback. And the good thing was that I could work online. Together with my Dutch designer and Dutch programmer we formed a very effective team via Skype, phone and e-mail.
Time for decisions. For me it is the most important that Hope and me stay together. I don’t want to leave her for a longer period of time. My work as marketing consultant and executive combined perfect with the trip. So that is the solution. We stay in the Caribbean in 2014 and there is fast internet here anywhere. A flight to the Netherlands for business and family visit match well. Apart from the Dutch market I can operate on the Caribbean market. A Skype call to my team shows they are still ready: developing websites, flyers, business cards, company colors and more. For a good price we bring strategic marketing advice and marketing instruments. Perhaps we can welcome you as reader in the future as our customer.
