Holland Jachtbouw in Zaandam has a reputation in the Netherlands and abroad to build unique superyachts. The company rebuilt the famous J class Rainbow, which in 1934 won the America’s Cup in favor of Endeavor. When Rainbow is in Antigua, Joshua seizes his chance: ” from the day that I saw her on the dock , I wanted to sail on her.”
Walking the dock
I put on my boat shoes and appropriate clothing and walk the dock with my resume under my arm towards Rainbow. I walk alongside while her Dutch flag merrily waves in the Antiguan trade winds. What a fine yacht! I am perplexed. I speak to the first person I see on deck which turns out to be the first mate. He is very friendly and says he may call me one of these days . I am confident about his reaction and decide to stop looking for work and go to the beach instead. When I am reading a book next day under a palm tree , the phone rings – ” HI Joshua , this is Simon from Rainbow .”
I am asked to help as bosun ‘s assistant . Rainbow has a good 46 winchbuttons on the teak deck which operate the electric winches and they have to be replaced. I go to work and help with the replacement of the buttons. After four days of work Rainbow sets sail to the British Virgin Islands for a regatta and I’m setting of to work on other boats .
One things leads to another
Katia leaves a few days later to the British Virgins on a super yacht, and on one of the parties she meets the captain of Rainbow. They have an amicable conversation and casually come to talk of the trip around the world which Katia and me are making. The captain remembers my work and suggests we come to help during the Antigua classics. Katia calls me up excited – “wow we might go sailing on Rainbow during the Antigua Classics!”
Training for Antigua Classics
During the Antigua classics I work on the front deck as deck assist and Katia works below with the other stewardesses . When we set out for a test sail, there is a slight breeze. The carbon fiber mast , carbon rigging and light body make the classic J into a modern lightweight powerhouse. With 13 knots of wind she glides through the waves with 12 knots Wow, this is truly magical! And then to think that the Regatta has yet to start…
