This trip began when Joshua graduated for his Master in Law in 2009 in Utrecht. Because I did not particularly fancy a life as a lawyer, and I wanted to enjoy my twenties, I decided to sail around the world. I started a small enterprise and bought Hope early 2010. I headed southbound in summer 2011 with an alternating crew of adventurers. I wanted to also take people on the trip, share the adventure via my blog and media and give guest lectures. Then still under the banner of www.positivewave.nl. Nice plans which I only managed to fully put in practice the last year and a half.
The story of Katia and me getting together, started in an Italian restaurant in the Cape Verdes where Katia worked, and stood in the door every night. She was so beautifull, that her chef, out of some kind of protectivity, did not let her on the terras. As a hawk she kept an eye on Katia. In an unguarded moment I asked Katia’s number which she scribbeled down and pressed into my hand.
She thought I was kind of an oddball with my big beard, but also found me interesting. We had some contact but I sailed away to Brazil together with my brother. Then I flew back to the Cape Verdes after a couple of weeks to work in the Cape Verdes as captain of Perseverance of London and marketing executive. I asked Katia to work as hostess and in that period our love started.
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover. Mark Twain
On this picture we are together as the crew of Perseverance of London in september 2012. In june 2013 Katia and me flew to Brazil to continue sailing with Hope. We sailed via Brazil to Suriname, Guyana and Tobago to Trinidad and the Caribbean. In 2014 we stayed in the Caribbean and in early 2015 set sail for Panama and into the Pacific ocean. We are usually in the Netherlands one to two times a year
We live a simple life on board of Hope; in a relaxed tempo using mainly the wind and sun for our energy supply. We eat healthy, enjoy and learn from the world, every single day.
And now? The coming period we want to discover the South Pacific and South East Asia. Our priority is going to places where we get in touch with the local people. When we stop travelling we don’t know. It is to much fun to think about that to much.
If you are new to our blog and you have the ambition, you can scroll down on the home page to read up on our adventure. And if you join us on Facebook you get the most recent updates and blogs. Every week we write a blog and sometimes more often. In between we also do more and more with video. We always like hearing from you, especially on the ocean. Do you send us a message? In any case, nice to meet you and welcome on board!
